0-0 in the first leg of the round of 16 – Despite improved performance: Servette cannot defeat Pilsen – Sport

  • In the first leg of the round of 16 in the Conference League, Servette and Viktoria Pilsen played 0-0.
  • In a hard-fought game, the Genevans have advantages, especially in the second half.
  • The second leg in Pilsen will take place next Thursday.

A close duel was expected between Servette and Viktoria Pilsen, but it turned out to be a close duel. After a hard-fought first half with slight advantages for the guests, Geneva improved after the break. The inclusion of Miroslav Stevanovic, who came into the game for Jérémy Guillemenot, who was in danger of being red, was supposed to be René Weiler’s right option.

It was Stevanovic who threatened to score for the first time in the 53rd minute. However, his shot flew over the housing. Shortly afterwards, the Bosnian shot again after a corner, but hardly put any pressure behind the ball.

Late chances

Servette seemed encouraged by Stevanovic’s attempts to do more on offense. Again and again, quick counter-attacks rolled forward over the right side. But the active Bendeguz Bolla and his teammates always lacked the ultimate precision.

With the substitutions of Alexis Antunes and Timothé Cognat, who had recently been in top form, Weiler strengthened his offensive again. Antunes was only missing a little with around five minutes left and he would have directed a Stevanovic assist into the goal. But keeper Martin Jedlicka was there. And just two minutes later it was Stevanovic himself who saw his shot blocked. So in the end it remained 0-0 – which the Czechs probably liked more than the Genevans.

Defensive bulwark holds

The Geneva defense once again showed a strong performance – Servette did not concede a goal for the fifth time in a row. And the last Swiss representative in the European Cup managed to do something that no team had managed to do so far this season, namely to prevent Pilsen from meeting and winning. The Pilsen team had won all of their 6 group games.

Servette knows the situation with a 0-0 draw in the first leg very well. The Genevans had already prevailed in the 1/16 final after a goalless draw at home thanks to a 1-0 win at Ludogorets Razgrad. So the signs could well be worse.

This is how it goes

The second leg will take place in Pilsen in a week, kick-off is at 6:45 p.m. In the Super League, Servette will face Lausanne-Sport on Sunday from 2:15 p.m.
