Inter Milan’s hopes returned in the 62nd minute. Liverpool gave Lautaro Martinez a little time and space on the left side of the box, which the Argentine punished with a powerful shot into the top right corner of the goal. Another goal was missing to forget the 0:2 mortgage from the first leg.
But the hope was suddenly dashed. Alexis Sanchez saw the second yellow card a few seconds after the restart for entering Fabinho open-footed. Already with his first warning he had touched Thiago with his sole on the ankle.
Matip with a crossbar shot
Inter had started slightly dominant, just as they had in the first leg. However, with the home fans behind them, Liverpool grew stronger this time before the Italians could make any significant advances on the English goal.
The home team joined them: Joel Matip headed the crossbar after a Trent Alexander-Arnold free kick. Less than a minute later, his central defender partner Virgil van Dijk failed after a corner from Alexander-Arnold.
Salah with 2 post shots
More attempts followed in the second half, most notably from Liverpool. Mohamed Salah only hit the post in front of the empty goal (52nd). Inter goalie Samir Handanovic would have been beaten. In the 76th minute, Salah hit the edge of the goal with a volley.
But because Inter had allowed themselves to be sent off unnecessarily after the 1-0 win and could no longer become dangerous as a result, the narrow defeat without a goal was enough for Liverpool to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
