The neutral spectator was longing for the final whistle when the last minute of added time arrived in Porto. But the home team had saved the final bouquet until last in an previously dull game. Galeno wasn’t tackled enough and tried his luck with a shot from around 18 meters. The striker’s attempt landed unstoppably in the back of the net for Arsenal keeper David Raya to make it 1-0.

The home team’s lucky punch was not undeserved. Although Porto had less play throughout the game, they were extremely secure at the back. The Porto defense, orchestrated by the soon to be 41-year-old Pepe, did not allow a single shot on goal against the favored guests.

Galeno’s double chance

Arsenal actually got off to a promising start in what was expected to be a difficult away game at the Drachenstadion. However, the Londoners had very little to do with the almost 80 percent possession of the ball in the opening quarter of an hour. Porto blocked the passing lanes cleverly and the guests lacked any brilliant ideas in the final third of the attack.

While Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta couldn’t find any really dangerous chances for his men to score in the first half, the home fans’ celebrations stuck in their throats twice in the 21st minute. After a deflected cross from Francisco Conceicao, Galeno was free to finish from the best position. The ball hit the left post and bounced again at the striker’s feet. His second attempt also narrowly missed the goal.

The Brazilian’s double chance remained the highlight of the game until almost the end. Because the 26-year-old made up for what he missed in stoppage time, his team goes into the second leg with an advantage. This will take place on March 13th in London.
