It took Fabian Rohner just over a minute in Edinburgh to put the lid on. The 24-year-old came on as a substitute in the 79th minute, and in the 80th minute he scored the 1-0 winner for Zurich after assisting Wilfried Gnonto. Rohner not only calmed the nerves of his coach Franco Foda, he also rewarded his team for a significant increase in performance in the second half

With the 2-1 lead from the first leg behind them, FCZ had started the game more than cautiously. In the sold-out Tynecastle Park, the guests from Zurich were at times literally squeezed into their own half of the pitch.

First Mirlind Kryeziu saved his team from going behind with a tackle (34′), then Liam Boyce headed just over the goal (43′). The statistics showed a whopping 73 percent ball possession and 10:1 completions after 45 minutes in favor of the “Hearts”. It was only with luck that coach Foda’s team saved the goalless draw at half-time.

In the majority it works

A stupid thing by Jorge Grant should give the FCZ the boost they need after the break. The Englishman dropped in the 54th minute in the Zurich penalty area without making contact with an opponent and consequently saw a yellow card. Because it was his second warning, he was sent off.

With a majority, the people of Zurich didn’t burn much. Just before the opening goal, Aiyegun Tosin failed on the post. Due to the increase in performance after the break and in view of the performance in the first leg, FCZ deserve to progress.

Here’s how to proceed

The FCZ opponents in the group phase will be drawn on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The first group game will be on September 8th. In everyday league life, FC Zurich is challenged in the classic on Sunday: At 4:30 p.m., the champions welcome FC Basel.
