1: 1 against Spain – A “gap” secures Germany the 1st World Cup point – Sport

  • Germany and Spain will split 1-1 in Group E at the 2022 World Cup.
  • For coach Hansi Flick’s team, it’s the first point in this year’s title fights.
  • In the other game of Group E, Costa Rica are lucky enough to win 1-0.

Deep in stoppage time, Leroy Sané suddenly had the chance to shoot Germany to victory against Spain. But the Bayern striker missed out on trying to finish alone in front of Spain keeper Unai Simon. So the duel between the two football heavyweights remained at a fair 1:1.

The 90 minutes before hadn’t always done justice to the affiche: while Germany was visibly trying to make it to Qatar after the 2-1 embarrassment against Japan at the start of the World Cup, Spain showed themselves – unlike the 7-0 win. Gala against Costa Rica – always too playful.

So in the end it was two “believed dead” who were responsible for the goals:

  • 63 minutes: Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata gets the ball in front of Niklas Süle after a cross from Jordi Alba and scores to make it 1-0.
  • 83 minutes: Niclas Füllkrug – nicknamed gap – is responsible for the equalizer with a wonderful finish. The “storm edge” from Werder Bremen defeated Simon with a real hammer.

Both Morata and Full Pitcher belong to the old-fashioned Striker. In Spain and Germany in particular, this species has been increasingly replaced by the “false 9” in recent years. The duel in Al-Khor was therefore a real plea.

Flick reacts to embarrassment against Japan

The hit game on the German side started with 2 changes: Thilo Kehrer and Leon Goretzka started for Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz, who had not convinced against Japan. However, it was the Iberians who started the game better. Already in the 7th minute Dani Olmo woke up the sleepy Germans with his bang on the crossbar.

Only from the middle of the half did the DFB team get going better. First, Serge Gnabry narrowly missed (25′), then Antonio Rüdiger headed in to make it 1-0, but the Real Madrid defender was clearly offside after a free kick. After the break, the action leveled off significantly – until the two “storm edges” still made something countable.

This is how it goes

The 1-1 draw doesn’t change much in Group E before the final group games. All teams can still qualify for the round of 16. The showdown will take place next Thursday. At 8:00 p.m. the duels Costa Rica – Germany and Japan – Spain will take place at the same time. The Flick-Elf certainly needs a win to get into the knockout phase.
