Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has just overtaken “Super Mario Bros” at the international box office and becomes the biggest hit of 2023.
Barbie can’t stop! Greta Gerwig’s film has just overtaken Super Mario Bros at the international box office and thus becomes the biggest success of 2023.
Released on April 5, the animated film Super Mario Bros has garnered 1.359 billion dollars internationally, while Barbie has recorded, to date, 1.383 billion dollars in revenue.
The feature film worn by Margot Robbie – who received a nice sum for the feature film of which she is also a producer – Ryan Gosling, America Ferrara and Simu Liu therefore becomes the most profitable film of the year. In the United States, the candy pink comedy recorded $612 million against $574 million for the film from Illumination studios.
Barbie thus becomes the fifteenth biggest success in history and the first entirely directed by a woman.
For its part, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer becomes the 3ᵉ biggest success of the year at the world box office.
A great success that could very well result in a raid at the next Oscars ceremony. Already nominated for the Oscar for best director for Lady Bird in 2018 and best adapted screenplay for The Daughters of Doctor March in 2020, will Greta Gerwig finally win the precious statuette for Barbie? Anyway, these figures should accelerate the start of construction of the suites desired by Mattel. Last July, Ynon Kreiz, CEO of Mattel, announced that Barbie was just the start of a new franchise. In an interview with Time magazine, the latter was enthusiastic about the idea of producing “more Barbi moviese”.
In the meantime, Barbie will be released in IMAX theaters in the United States on September 22, and will be visible in IMAX in France between September 20 and 26, with unseen images after the credits.
