20 years ago, the Swiss won his first of 20 Grand Slam titles in Wimbledon.
Back in 2001, at the age of just 19, Roger Federer indicated what immense talent slumbered in him by winning Wimbledon against the then dominator Pete Sampras and reaching the quarter-finals.
Two years later, the talent had finally become a champion: With a 7: 6, 6: 2, 7: 6 victory over Mark Philippoussis, the Swiss secured his first Grand Slam title on July 6, 2003 in London. It should be the beginning of an outstanding career with 20 major successes, 103 tournament wins and countless new records.
Federer triumphed eight times between 2003 and 2017 on the “sacred lawn” of Wimbledon alone. The 41-year-old thus holds the record. But this year Novak Djokovic has the chance to catch up with the “Maestro” with another win. But one thing is certain: the memories of Federer’s first title in Wimbledon will remain.
