1% of employees in the private sector earned nearly €10,000 net per month in 2020, Actualité/Actu Quotidien


The latest INSEE data on salaries in the private sector show that a full-time equivalent employee (EQTP) earned an average of €2,518 net per month (€3,300 gross) in 2020. This study excludes employees in the agricultural sector. , public sector agents, employees of private employers, as well as apprentices and trainees.

Women still far behind

At constant socio-professional category, sector of activity and employment conditions, INSEE estimates that this net salary increased in 2020 by 1.5% in constant euros. Even if the gap has narrowed by 0.9 points compared to 2019 and by 5.7 points since 2008, women still earned on average 15.2% less than men in EQTP: €2,280 net against €2,689 €.

Exceptional bonuses

This average net salary increased more rapidly among executives, who posted an average of €4,341 net per month compared to €2,459 for intermediate professions, €1,785 for employees and €1,855 for blue-collar workers. Employees in particular benefited more from the exceptional purchasing power bonus (Pepa), renewed in 2020, and, in private health establishments, from the “Covid” bonus. These bonuses contributed a total of 1 point to the increase in their average net salary, more than for intermediate professions (+ 0.5 point) and workers (+ 0.4 point).

Hourly wage

The average net hourly wage stood at €16.3 for all employees in the private sector in 2020. That of executives, at €28.3 net on average, is around 2.5 times higher than that of white-collar workers. (€11.6) and workers (€12).

The median salary is 20% lower than the average salary

In 2020, half of private sector employees received less than €2,005 net per month in EQTP. This median net wage is 20% lower than the average wage, which reflects a greater concentration of wages at the bottom of the distribution.

About 80% of employees had a net monthly salary between the minimum wage (€1,219) and €3,400. Only 10% earned more than €4,033 net per month. As for the biggest salaries, they were concentrated on a small portion of 1%, amounting to more than 9,638 €.
