Root apps can run on rooted smartphones and provide very helpful features. We have listed what we think are the best free root apps here.
AFWall+
The root app AFWall+ (Android Firewall Plus) prevents certain installed apps from being able to access the Internet. This is useful for apps that like to “phone home” in the background, but don’t need it for their actual function. In addition, you can also prevent advertising that loads apps over the Internet, which often occurs in games, for example.
Permission Ruler
The “Permission Ruler” app disables permissions for certain apps if your display is disabled. Turning the screen back on will re-enable app permissions. So you can be sure that apps in the background are not reading your data or doing other naughty things. However, if certain apps should continue to retain some permissions, such as location permission for Google Maps, you can configure appropriate exceptions.
nap time
By default, Android can take up to an hour to turn on battery saver (Doze) mode. The Naptime app activates this in a few minutes after the display has been switched off. So the battery can last much longer. To do this, activate the “Aggressive doze” option in the app. If required, Naptime can also automatically disable Wi-Fi, mobile data or Bluetooth when Doze mode is active.
Tipatch (for TWRP)
The custom recovery TWRP basically backs up data without your own pictures and the contents of the download folder. But if you want to back up these folders, simply install the Tipatch app. It installs a patch in TWRP, which then saves backups including images and downloads as a backup. Keep in mind that this can increase the size of your backups enormously. It may be useful to connect a USB stick to the smartphone to create the backup on it. This only works if your smartphone supports the USB OTG function.
Migrate – ROM data backup: 4.0
Migrate is basically the current variant of “Titanium Backup”, with which you can back up apps and their settings. If you wish, the app saves your apps and their settings and saves them in zip files, which you can later flash again using a custom recovery such as TWRP. This is particularly interesting for everyone who often switches between different “custom ROMs” and does not want to set up their apps again and again.
SuperFreezZ app stopper
This app can do what Greenify can do, but it’s open source. “SuperFreezZ App-Stopper” freezes apps in the background so that they cannot “phone home” and do not consume the battery unnecessarily. You configure individually which apps may be frozen. You can set up exceptions for messenger or email apps that require an ongoing background connection to show notifications. These can then continue to operate in the background.
Downloads:
The app cannot be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Installs the alternative store F-Droid. You can find the app here.
root checker
The “Root Checker” app will confirm if you really have root rights in Android. If not, the rooting process did not work properly.
WiFi key recovery
Forgot your WiFi password? The “WiFi Key Recovery” app reads the respective (already entered) WiFi passwords on rooted smartphones. To do this, you must have been connected to the WiFi network in the past. So you can’t hack into an unknown network with it.
Adaway
Adaway removes intrusive ads on websites and apps that want to load ads over the Internet.
Downloads:
The app is not available in the “Google Play Store”. You can download it from the alternative store F-Droid here.
SD Maid
The system cleaner app SD Maid also works without root, but you only get the full range of functions with a rooted smartphone. Not only can you use it to clear cache and remove orphaned files from old installations, but you can also remove apps rooted in the system, export APKs, and freeze applications.
