10 ideas for organizing your office

A real workplace for some, a simple administrative corner for others: your office may not seem the most glamorous place in your home, but this should not be neglected. Quite the contrary! A tidy desk is a fulfilling workplace, and it's the certainty of easily finding all your important documents. Follow our 7 tips and you will see, your office will be more organized than ever!

Tired of spending hours looking for a document, losing your pens under piles of paper, having to flex your elbows to write on a corner of your desk? Now is the time toorganize your office. To clear the space once and for all and see more clearly in your work, here are 7 tips that are easy to apply.

Step 1: I sort it out!

One of the golden rules for feeling good at your office is knowing how to get rid of unnecessary things.
Reports, quotes, invoices, completed notebooks … Don't be afraid to throw it away! You know, those old files that you keep "just in case", those pens that work every third time, those books you never opened. So here we go, roll up your sleeves and sort, throw, give and keep what you really need.

For efficient storage, first remove everything on and in your desk, then organize it into categories. Set up a stack of solitary papers, another of pens, and another of knick-knacks and other decorations.

Now sort each stack and keep only what you need. This receipt dating from 2003 can without fear end up in the trash. However, your tax statement or rent receipt must be kept.

At the end of this step, you should end up with smaller batteries that contain only the essentials.

Have you found tracing paper, graph paper, duplicate copies and other compasses from your student years? If you do not have the use, know that many associations will take them with pleasure! These school supplies will be used by children whose families cannot necessarily equip themselves properly when it comes time to start school. In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

And while you're at it, wouldn't you be sorting out your computer? You can delete all unnecessary folders and documents. Put aside the documents to be archived on an external hard drive and reorganize the files of the moment! Also, remember to clean up your email by deleting old emails, unsubscribing from newsletters that no longer interest you, and sorting those to keep in files by senders or subjects.

Step 2: I put away

Once your office has been relieved of all its unnecessary supplies, it's time to tidy up. But not just any old way. According to Marie Kondo, the pope of storage, it is essential to make an office organization as simple as possible.

Forget about overly complex storage and focus on simplicity so that you can see at a glance everything you have available. This will allow you to win time and will help you quickly find the items you have stored.

Arrange your books on shelves. The top of your desk should be nearly empty except maybe for your computer. Everything else should be stored in drawers.

Your desk doesn't have drawers? No problem, you can easily decorate it with metal boxes or wooden blocks into which you can slide baskets.

Step 3: organize my papers

Organize a space dedicated to documents on your desktop according to their status:

  • To read : for your mail for example
  • Treat : invoices, quotes, reminders …
  • To conserve : rent receipts, certificates, payslips, statements, etc.

The idea is to classify them correctly and especially to know how to get hold of them when necessary! To do this, take care to store each paper in the correct box or pocket. For example, you can choose different colors for each theme. In short, reserve a place for each object or file to see more clearly!

Tip: once a week, try to take an inventory of the contents of these boxes. File what needs to be sorted, deal with outstanding bills, and throw away what doesn't interest you.

Step 4: I opt for vertical storage

Adopt the Marie Kondo method and bet on vertical storage. This will not only save space but also avoid stacking things up.

Favor smart storage in height for a workspace uncluttered. And then, you won't need to completely undo your stack to get your hands on an important piece of paper or the book you need. It's still more practical, isn't it?

To do this, invest in small accessories and multifunction storage. Magazine rack, mail organizer, bookends … fill up on ideas in our selection for top organization.

Step 5: organize my drawers

For a tidy desk, your drawers should always be tidy. There is nothing better for this than organizers and drawer compartments.

Do you really need 10 black pens and 15 blue pens? Not only do they take up your space, you will never get over them since you use them all at the same time. Keep only one of each and store the rest in a section called the “supply store”. This also applies to your notebooks, notepads and other adhesive tapes.

If you don't have storage available, don't panic. You can very well use old shoe boxes, an old wooden cutlery tray or even glass jars for a more designer look.

If your desk is too small, think about shelves!
Drilling holes in your wall not plugging in? Buy a bookcase and set it up in front of your desk. Easy to find and assemble, it will allow you to have shelves above and below your desk. In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

Step 6: what if I decorated my office?

At work and at home, do not hesitate to create an office area that you like and reflects your personality.

The decoration therefore plays an important role and in particular on your productivity. Without going so far as to decorate your desk from floor to ceiling, personalize your personal space with decorative touches. Post-it notes, stickers, notebooks, notepads, pencil holders, desk pad, so many little details that will brighten up your workspace, especially if you have chosen them yourself.

Also consider the collage to hang cool photos, motivational quotes or create an inspiring moodboard. Enough to start the day on the right foot! To change it as often as you want, use a clever hanging system, such as the Decorative Pliers from the Command ™ brand. They are suitable for many smooth surfaces (painted walls, tiles, wood, etc.) and will allow your photos, memos and other cards to be attached to the walls without damaging the walls or leaving traces when removing the clip. This system is perfect for tenants who don't want to drill into walls and is an ideal alternative to tacks, staples or spikes.

Green plants are also ideal for decorating your office, open space or at home. Recognized for their soothing virtues, they will help you organize a nice workspace. Favor depolluting and easy to maintain plants such as Dracanea, Senseveria or Chlorophytum. Not to mention the very practical, trendy and resistant succulents and cacti.

Step 7: A little DIY never hurts!

  • Create a mail organizer

Using cardboard boxes or shoeboxes, you can make a desk or mail organizer that allows you to store important papers as well as your binders or your favorite pens.

  • Make a desk organizer

To achieve this pretty and practical wooden desk organizer, Lisa from Make My Lemonade used:

  • a wooden sign,
  • small wooden pencil boxes and jars,
  • some drawing clips or clips,
  • plastic hose clamps,
  • a small adhesive mirror,
  • a cork plate,
  • 2 golden door knobs,
  • a chain with small medallions,
  • paint,
  • double-sided tape

The detailed tutorial can be found on the Make My Lemonade blog, in the section DIY. To obviously adapt to your needs and desires!

  • Build a system for your computer cables

Besides, these little tweezers can work wonders for all your computer cables, especially if you have a laptop. Hanging on the edge of your desk, they will allow you to slide your cables inside so that they are within reach of your hand, so that they do not tie a knot and above all so that you no longer step on them.

Another tip: use colored stickers to know which device each wire belongs to.
