1000 Days Without a New Skin: This LoL Champion Joins Riot Games' Elite Character Roster

In League of Legends, champions experience unequal treatment regarding skin releases, with popular characters receiving frequent updates while others, like Ryze, go years without new appearances. Ryze, a once-favored mage, has not had a new skin in over 1000 days, reflecting a broader trend affecting several champions. The latest patch does not include any new skins for Ryze or those in a similar situation, while other champions receive exciting updates, leaving them to continue their wait.

Unequal Treatment of Champions in League of Legends

In the world of League of Legends, champions do not enjoy the same level of skin availability. The most beloved characters are frequently graced with new skins, while niche champions often languish in obscurity. This strategy makes sense for Riot Games, as the financial success of the game heavily relies on the sale of cosmetic items. However, some champions have been overlooked for an astonishing 1000 days, desperately waiting for a new appearance.

Ryze: An Iconic Yet Overlooked Champion

When League of Legends first launched, players had a limited selection of champions, one of whom was Ryze. Regarded as the most formidable mage in Runeterra, Ryze was once a fan favorite, particularly in the skilled hands of legendary player Faker. However, his popularity has waned over the months, and he has been out of the ‘meta’ for quite some time, despite remaining a viable choice.

As a result, Ryze’s pick rate has plummeted to just 2.6% across all ranks, according to data from League of Graphs. This decline in popularity is mirrored by the developers’ actions; Ryze has not seen a new skin in 1004 days, with his last cosmetic update being the Ryze of the Arcane skin released in April 2022. He now finds himself among an exclusive group of champions who have gone over 1000 days without a new appearance.

Currently, this group includes six champions, and while Ryze is certainly in a tough spot, he is not the most unfortunate:

  • Xin Zhao: 1082 days since his last skin, Pyrotechnician (January 2022)
  • Corki: 1291 days since his last skin, Astronaut (July 2021)
  • Braum: 1313 days since his last skin, Cocktails (June 2021)
  • Alistar: 1438 days since his last skin, Lunar Beast (February 2021)
  • Skarner: 1510 days since his last skin, Cosmic Sting (November 2020)

Skarner’s case is particularly noteworthy; he has not received a new skin in over four years, although he underwent a complete rework last year, updating all of his appearances.

No New Skins for Ryze on the Horizon

Regrettably, Ryze’s plight will not improve with the upcoming patch 25.S1.2 for season 15. The newly announced skins for this patch do not include him. Instead, players can look forward to exciting new skins for the Mythic family featuring Nami, Cassiopeia, Jarvan IV, and Jhin, along with Café Chouchous-themed skins for Seraphine, Amumu, and Syndra. Unfortunately, Ryze and his fellow champions in the 1000-day club will have to continue waiting.

In a recent reveal, players were treated to a visually stunning trailer for season 15 of League of Legends, thanks to the creative team at Fortiche. This beautiful trailer offers a glimpse into the thrilling content awaiting players after Arcane, and anticipation is high for what will come next.
