12VHPWR power cable problem? The simple “solution” from MSI

The “solution” solves only part of the problem of graphics cards NVIDIA most recent, but a big part all the same.

A few weeks after the release of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090s, melting issues with the 12VHPWR connector were discovered.

A misleading “beast”

Without directly mentioning graphics card references – at least on recent models – MSI took advantage of Computex 2023, which is currently being held in Taipei, to present a new product.

A very simple product, but found so well that we do not understand why it was not implemented earlier. Indeed, it is a kind of polarizer allowing to signal to the user if the power cable is well inserted in a modular block.

MSI demonstrated this to our colleagues at PC World using a block of its manufacture, the MSI MAG 850GL PCIe Gen5 ATX3.0. That said, the solution is all the more interesting in that it is not limited to this block.

Generalized soon?

Indeed, MSI has simply used a yellow plastic element to indicate the portion of the connector that must be fully inserted into the power supply: if you can still see this yellow portion, it means that you have to push the plug further. It’s as simple as that !


Any manufacturer should be able to use it on their own blocks and it works in “both directions”: meaning that it allows you to see if the cable is deep enough on the power supply side, but also on the side of the graphics card.

That said, it should be noted that voices have been raised to say that the insertion of the cable may not be the only cause of the melting problems observed. It could be that twisting the cable is not innocent and that other factors come into play. Still, with these cables we would have already limited the problem. Sorry to have wasted the time.
