  • Filippo Ganna wins the 2nd time trial at the Giro d’Italia over 31.2 kilometers from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda.
  • Tadej Pogacar, who finished 2nd 29 seconds behind, further extended his lead in the overall standings.
  • The queen stage is on the program on Sunday with an altitude of 5,700 meters.

In the first hilly time trial of this year’s Giro, Tadej Pogacar was just ahead of time trial specialist Filippo Ganna and celebrated the stage victory. On Saturday the second battle against the clock took place on flat terrain over 31.2 kilometers. Once again Pogacar and Ganna fought head-to-head – with a better end for the Italian. Ganna celebrated the 7th Giro stage win of his career in Desenzano del Garda.

The 27-year-old crossed the finish line over a minute ahead of former world champion Tobias Foss and then left rider after rider behind. Only when the last driver, Pogacar, started, did Ganna tremble. The Slovenian was 4 seconds ahead of Ganna in the first split, but fell behind the Italian in the second half of the course and finished 2nd, 29 seconds behind.

Tension behind Pogacar

Although Pogacar missed his 4th personal success in this Giro, he continued to extend his lead in the overall ranking before the queen stage – to over 3:40 minutes. The overall victory is unlikely to be taken away from the Slovenian.

Behind Pogacar, however, there is an exciting four-way battle for the last two podium places. There are only 15 seconds between the first two pursuers, Geraint Thomas (+3:41) and Daniel Felipe Martinez (+3:56). Behind them there are two other drivers in waiting: Ben O’Connor (+4:35) and Antonio Tiberi (+5:17).

This is how it continues

On Sunday, the 15th section, the queen stage of this year’s Giro, is on the program. Pogacar and Co. travel over 222 km from Manerba del Garda to Livigno. There is no less than 5700 (!) meters of altitude and 3 climbs in the 1st category to be mastered. From 2 p.m. you can watch it live on SRF info.
