  • FC Zurich also loses the 3rd game in the Europa League. The Swiss champions went down 5-1 against PSV Eindhoven in the Letzigrund.
  • Yorbe Vertessen (10th/15th), Cody Gakpo (21st/55th) and Xavi Simons (35th) are responsible for the Dutchman’s goals. Only Jonathan Okita scores for FCZ (87th).
  • In the second game of Group A Arsenal meets Bodö/Glimt from 21:00.

A long pass from the PSV defense by Armando Obispo to Yorbe Vertessen was enough after almost 10 minutes to throw the entire FCZ defense for the first time. The striker didn’t miss the chance to beat Yanick Brecher with a well-aimed shot to make it 1-0.

Just 6 minutes later, Mirlind Kryeziu lost the ball with serious consequences, had no chance in the running duel with Vertessen and had to watch the 21-year-old score twice. And that’s not all for the Swiss champions: Cody Gakpo scored a long-range shot in the 21st minute to make it 3-0.

Talent Simons also hits

19-year-old Xavi Simons scored his first goal on the international stage against an overwhelmed Zurich side. 10 minutes before the break, after a nice interaction with Gakpo, he followed up energetically in the penalty area and tipped the ball past Brecher.

Shortly before the break, the Swiss champions almost scored the first goal with their first chance. However, symptomatic of the Zurich appearance, Aiyegun Tosin managed to spear the ball over the goal from three meters.

Okita with only Zurich lifetimes

After the change of sides, PSV shifted down a few gears with the reassuring leadership behind them, but still remained dominant in the game. And the FCZ continued to grant freedoms. Gakpo used this to make it 5-0 with a long-range shot. Once again, Brecher was left with nothing to do.

Because Jonathan Okita scored the FCZ consolation goal three minutes before the end, Zurich can at least be happy to have scored a goal in the third Europa League game. Ultimately, FCZ must be satisfied with the 1:5, because the result could have been even clearer. Anwar El Ghazi and Ismael Saibari hit the bar for PSV.

Here’s how to proceed

With 0 points halfway through the group games, FC Zurich is still a long way off. The Europa League continues next Thursday away with the next game against PSV, then in Eindhoven. First up in the championship on Sunday (4:30 p.m.) against FC Winterthur. In the basement duel between the 9th and 10th in the Super League, it’s about not losing touch.
