17.80 euros – the Augustiner beer is now available in a wooden box

Reddish in color with a strong hop flavor and a subtle hint of caramel: just in time for Ash Wednesday, the “Fastenbier” is back on the table at the Augustiner Bräu. Anyone who wants to secure the special beer for their own four walls will in future be able to get it in handmade wooden crates – and exclusively.

Up until the 1960s it was common practice throughout Austria – the Augustiner Bräu is thus returning to an old tradition: the brewery will be selling its fasting beer in a wooden crate in the coming weeks. “Away from plastic, towards more sustainability,” says Managing Director Abbot Johannes Perkmann. The handmade boxes made of spruce, fir and ash come from the Moosdorf company KF-Holz. Because of the high purchasing costs, you have to pay 17.80 euros per box. “Anyone who makes an effort can have the money back a day later,” laughs master brewer Hansjörg Höplinger.
