17 dead in Nepal: landslides bury houses

After masses of mud have buried people and houses in a mountainous region of Nepal, rescue workers are looking for survivors.

(dpa) Heavy rain late Friday in a remote mountainous region of Nepal triggered landslides, buried houses and left dead and injured. At least 17 people were found dead at three different locations in the Achham district in the west of the country, authorities said on Saturday. The search for at least six missing people continued.

Eleven people have been rescued alive from the mud since the rescue work began on Saturday morning, Achham District Administrator Dipesh Rijal told the DPA news agency. Three of them had to be treated for serious injuries. Natural disasters are more common in Nepal because of the mountainous terrain and large rivers.
