The next time you go to the mailbox, you may find a letter from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) among your everyday mail. At first you are probably wondering whether you are being investigated or whether a witness statement is needed from you. You may also have the not unfounded thought that this is an attempted scam. After all, criminals will stop at nothing to lure you into a trap.
However, we can reassure you. There are no nasty surprises waiting for you in the envelope and you can open it without hesitation. It is just a survey by the BKA. It is called Security and Crime in Germany 2024 (SKiD 2024).
What should I do when receiving the survey?
With the survey, the Federal Criminal Police Office, together with the police in the individual federal states, would like to find out how safe the population of Germany currently feels. The experiences of victims and their experience with advertisements should also be recorded in this way. The result should lead to an improvement in security.
A total of 186,000 citizens over the age of 16 were randomly selected for the survey. Maybe you are one of them too. If this is the case, simply fill out the enclosed questionnaire, put it in the return envelope and send it to the address provided. Shipping is free of charge for you.
As the BKA states in the FAQ for the survey, your data will be treated as strictly confidential. No personal information will be passed on to the Federal Criminal Police Office and the survey will be evaluated anonymously.
Is participation in the survey compulsory?
If the survey has landed in your mailbox, you don’t necessarily have to take part. It is up to you whether you fill out the form or not. If you don’t want to take part in the survey, you just have to ignore the letter. This also applies to reminder letters. You don’t have to fear any consequences if you don’t participate.
