$190 million: it’s the most expensive horror film of all time, but despite its success, the sequel never saw the light of day

Signed in 2013 by Marc Foster, the spectacular zombie film “World War Z” directed by Brad Pitt was able to transform a substantial budget into a real commercial success. Announced for many years, its sequel was never made.

Adapted from the post-apocalyptic novel by Mark Brooks, World War Z offered a new dimension to the zombie film subgenre in 2013. With an international scope worthy of great disaster films such as The Day After Tomorrow or Independence Day, this feature film directed by Brad Pitt took place in various locations around the world, including New Jersey, South Korea, Israel and Wales.

The most expensive horror film of all time

Directed by Marc Forster (to whom we also owe Quantum of Solace, the 22nd James Bond adventure), World War Z followed the adventures of Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator forced to return to service to try to stem a transforming global pandemic. infected people become real threats to their fellow citizens.

Due to its ambition in terms of visual effects and the diversity of its filming locations, the film reached a substantial budget of 190 million dollars, which makes it (according to a recent ranking published by the MovieWeb site), the most expensive horror film of all time. In second place, we find Van Helsing and his 160 million dollars, then Wolfman (150 million).

A real box office success

A substantial initial outlay, therefore, which the feature film nevertheless managed to recover by recording an excellent score of 540 million greenbacks at the worldwide box office. Enough to offer him the possibility of starting work on a sequel.

For several years, a World War Z 2 was thus considered, always with Brad Pitt, and under the direction of David Fincher, who had already had the opportunity to work with the actor three times (in Se7en, Fight Club and Benjamin Button). Unfortunately, for several logistical reasons, the project was ultimately canceled.

Will it one day be put back on the table? Would you like to see a new World War Z from Fincher?
