The dress rehearsal for the cup semi-final cracker next Tuesday against YB at the same location was successful: Basel achieved an easy 2-0 home win against harmless Winterthurers. With Jean-Kévin Augustin and Bradley Fink, 2 FCB players who recently had to eat hard bread were successful.

Augustin and Fink have long dry spells

In the 25th minute, it was Augustin who scored to make it 1-0 after a burst of energy. He prevailed against 2 Winterthur defenders and then also caught FCW keeper Markus Kuster between the legs. After various injuries, Augustin was only in the starting XI for the second time this season. It was his third goal of the season following a brace against GC in September last year.

Winterthur’s streak ends

Fink had already celebrated for the first time in the 49th minute. But his goal was disallowed for being offside, as was that of Riccardo Calafiori in the 76th minute.

For his part, Winterthur hardly ever came near the Basel goal and presented himself as extremely harmless. Significant was the 68th minute, when Joaquin Ardaiz found plenty of space on the left and played the ball into the middle, but Matteo Di Giusto was prevented from finishing at the last second. This also ended a special series from Zurich. After 15 games with exactly one goal scored, the Eulachstadt team went away empty-handed for the first time.

Here’s how to proceed

As mentioned, Basel continues on Tuesday with the cup semi-final cracker against YB (8:15 p.m. live on SRF Zwei). On the following Saturday (6 p.m.) the classic away game at FCZ is on the agenda. Winterthur welcomes Lucerne in a week’s time on Sunday (4:30 p.m.).

Fink made the decision in the 85th minute. He headed a buttery cross from Liam Millar into the net from close range. The 19-year-old also had to endure a long dry spell, as he was last successful in November 2022.
