  • Simon Ehammer is crowned Vice World Champion in the heptathlon indoors.
  • Thanks to the 6363 points, the eastern Swiss improves his Swiss record by 78 points.
  • It is the second medal for Switzerland after Mujinga Kambundji’s gold in the 60m.
  • For Ditaji Kambundji, the final over 60 m hurdles ends with a fall.

One day after Mujinga Kambundji won the 60m title, Simon Ehammer secured Switzerland’s second medal at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in the heptathlon. The 22-year-old from Appenzell won silver in the heptathlon behind Canadian Olympic champion Damian Warner. With 6363 points, he improved his own Swiss record by 78 points.

Warner a touch too fast

Before the final 1000 m run, Ehammer was even in the lead. The fact that it would not be enough to win gold had already been assumed in the run-up to the run. Warner’s previous fastest time was around 15 seconds behind Ehammer’s. Warner overtook him in the last discipline.

Nevertheless, Ehammer can be more than satisfied with his 6363 points. Among other things, the 22-year-old achieved a personal best in the pole vault in the morning and excelled with a fast time over 60 m hurdles.

Oberholzer strong fifth

Andri Oberholzer provided a second highlight from a Swiss point of view. After a veritable race to catch up across all disciplines, the Thurgauer ended up in 5th place. In the end he had 6099 points. He improved his own best by 58 points. Thanks to strong performances over 60 m hurdles and in the pole vault, Oberholzer advanced from 9th to 5th place.
