Exactly a week ago, 17 vehicles from the Vienna fire department responded to a basement fire in a high-rise residential building on Simmeringer Muhrhoferweg. The drama repeated itself on Saturday night – was a serial arsonist wreaking havoc in the south of Vienna?
At around one o’clock in the morning, residents on a staircase in the large building raised the alarm – they had heard the smell of burning in the middle of the night. According to spokesman Jürgen Figerl, the fire brigade deployed 67 men in 17 vehicles to a location that also seemed strangely familiar to the Florianis. As police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger was able to confirm to the “Krone”, the criminal investigators’ investigations into the community building are in full swing. In the past few days there have reportedly been several break-ins in basement compartments, including fires that were quickly extinguished. Compartments were also cracked into overnight before fires were set.
