The legendary actor, who has won two Oscars and is a regular in the films of the Coen brothers and Steven Spielberg, has agreed to make a single appearance in an episode of “1883”, one of the prequels to Yellowstone.
The success of Yellowstone has now allowed the western franchise to attract the biggest names in cinema. The main series notably allowed Kevin Costner to relaunch his career, but before that Robert Redford could well have played the role of John Dutton.
The spin-off 1923, meanwhile, managed to convince Harrison Ford to accept the role of Jacob Dutton, while his wife Cara Dutton is played by the equally legendary Helen Mirren. Conversely, the lead role of 1883 – the other Yellowstone prequel – was given to Tim McGraw, who is mainly known to the public for his career as a country singer.
But one legendary actor did appear in the 1883 cast. In the opening scene of the second episode, a flashback reveals the main protagonist James Dutton’s past as a conferred soldier.

At the end of the bloody battle of Antietam, of which he is the sole survivor, the latter is comforted by the general at the head of the enemy troops, George Meade. Hidden behind a full beard and a Union soldier’s hat, the character’s interpreter may not have been recognized by fans of the series.
And yet, it is a very well-known actor since it is Tom Hanks who lends his features to the general, still celebrated to this day as one of the heroes of the Civil War. An event in more ways than one, since the American actor has only appeared in a handful of series during his career, and for the most part at the beginning.

The latter apparently accepted this role in the series, because of his friendship with Tim McGraw. The actor and the country singer have been friends for nearly thirty years, and it only took a phone call for the latter to agree to appear in 1883. “You don’t want to miss a scene when you have Tom Hanks in front of you.” Tim McGraw then commented to our colleagues atEntertainment Weekly.
1883 is clearly a family affair. While Tim McGraw’s wife – actress and country singer Faith Hill – also plays his on-screen better half, fans were also able to note the appearance of Rita Wilson – Tom Hanks’ wife – in the fifth episode of the series.
