Viktorija Golubic obviously had the will: Towards the end of the second set, she repeatedly stormed the net and used her style of play to defend herself against the impending defeat. Even a more than two-hour rain break did not bring Golubic back on course. She was able to fend off a break and match point in her own service game. Afterwards Martic served his way to victory, Golubic ended the match after 1:42 hours with a mistake.
The darned 1st round in Melbourne
The duel had already started with a delay: Due to the high temperatures in Melbourne, all games on the outdoor courts were interrupted for a good 3 hours. In the 1st set, Golubic had kept up well with Martic, who was 44 positions better – until a blatant sag at the score of 3: 4 from her point of view: she gave up her service game to zero and the set a little later.
But she didn’t let that deter her and advanced to 3:1 in the 2nd set. Here, too, the basis of success was a stormy attack on the net. However, the 30-year-old conceded the rebreak in the next game and later lost the sentence.
Overall, Golubic missed 9 of 11 break chances and “only” came up with 24 winners (Martic: 19/37) with 18 unforced errors. This means she doesn’t get past the starting lap “Down Under” even on the 7th attempt.
