2. Super-G in Cortina – The next coup: Odermatt makes the Cortina double perfect – Sport

Marco Odermatt also wins the 2nd Super-G in Cortina. Because rival Aleksander Kilde is eliminated, the small crystal ball for Odermatt is within reach.

  • 1. Marco Odermatt (SUI): 1:25.13 minutes
  • 2. Dominik Paris (ITA): +0.76s
  • 3. Daniel Hemetsberger (AUT): +1.07

The races in Cortina d’Ampezzo proved to be the perfect dress rehearsal for Marco Odermatt: After the Nidwalden native had already triumphed in the Super-G the day before, he doubled it on the “Olimpia delle Tofane” with an almost perfect run – only caught once Odermatt a less direct line than on Saturday.

So “Odi” took the day’s second Dominik Paris almost 8 tenths or the equivalent of 19.64 meters at the finish line. After the renewed demonstration of power, the 25-year-old finally forgot his worries about his injured knee and said after the race: “The confidence was there from the first turn. I was happy with starting number 11, so I was able to incorporate a few tactical details.”

Crystal ball for “Odi” within reach

Compared to Odermatt, numerous drivers had problems with the demanding course set by Swiss speed boss Reto Nydegger. So did Odermatt’s big rival Aleksander Kilde, who ventured onto the track as the 13th driver – the Norwegian even had to retire from the race for the day’s victory after 30 seconds of driving, Kilde missed a goal.

That plays into Odermatt’s hands: he will leave Cortina with 540 points in the Super-G classification, Kilde with 392. Because there are only 2 Super-G races left until the end of the season, the exceptional Swiss talent should be able to do it in Soldeu (AND) happy about winning the small crystal ball.

The other Swiss

Justin Murisier, who achieved his best Super-G result of the season with 7th place, made everyone sit up and take notice. With Gino Caviezel and Gilles Roulin, two other Swiss Ski athletes made it into the top 20. Stefan Rogentin, Niels Hintermann and Loïc Meillard dropped out in the same place as Kilde. The latter leaves Cortina with two zeros; on Wednesday he triumphed in the night giant slalom in Schladming.

Bliss in disguise for Casse

Mattia Casse, who was third the day before, had a short working day. The Italian also started quickly on Sunday, but after a good 15 seconds of driving, Casse lost his balance in the Tofana shot and crashed into the barrier at the edge of the slope at over 130 km/h. The 32-year-old got away with the shock, he drove to the finish without outside help.

Here’s how to proceed

The next men’s World Cup race is scheduled for Sunday, February 4th. The slalom cracks around Meillard, Henrik Kristoffersen and Co. are at the start in Chamonix.

The highlight of the season begins a day later with the World Championships in Courchevel/Méribel. The men will compete in Alpine Combined for the first time on Tuesday, February 7th. As always, you can watch all races live on SRF.
