20% of cars sold in February were electric or plug-in hybrids

Nearly 160,000 electric cars or plug-in hybrids were registered in Europe in February. The increase in sales seems to be directly linked to that of fuel prices.

While the overall European car market fell by 7%, plug-in cars, on the contrary, saw their sales increase by 38%.

100% electric cars preferred to hybrids

Compared to last year, there is a 79% increase in registrations of strictly electric vehicles (EV), against 6% for plug-in hybrids (PHV).

The best-selling models since 1er January 2022 are, in order: the Tesla Model 3, the Kia e-Niro (100% electric version) and the electric Fiat 500. We find in fourth place the Peugeot 3008 plug-in hybrid. The Tesla Model Y is experiencing strong growth and could dethrone the Model 3 during the year.

One might think that Tesla is the leader in the EV/PHV segment. It is however nothing. Indeed, BMW and Mercedes respectively hold 9.6% of the market share. Tesla is only ninth in the ranking, with 5.4%. However, it can be noted that in February, the Tesla brand Model 3 and Y clearly exceeded the volumes of competitors, with 9,089 and 6,879 vehicles registered respectively. The ranking could therefore change significantly during the course of the year…
