20 TB hard drive: huge memory for a small price

The Seagate Exos X20 20TB at a glance

The Seagate Exos X20 series is intended for the secure storage of data in NAS systems, for example. The hard drives are therefore designed to last. The average probability of failure (AFR) should be around 0.35 percent. In the test we had the Exos X20 with a proud 20 TB, but the series is also available with less memory. The cache is 256 MB, the speed is 7,200 rpm.

The most important key data from the test:

When writing, the hard disk reaches a value of 285 MB/s, the access time is 3.53 milliseconds. When reading, the Seagate hard drive achieves a transfer rate of 284 MB/s, the access time here is 11.07 milliseconds. Overall, these are top values for an HDD. The price initially sounds very high. Calculated down to the GByte, however, it shows that the disk is actually quite cheap: Depending on the price range, you pay between 2 and 2.6 cents per GByte.

Our assessment:

With 20 TB, the Seagate Exos X20 offers plenty of space for your data – and at a fair price. The reading and writing speeds are excellent for a classic HDD. In addition, the disk is designed for continuous operation in NAS systems and servers, which means that it should have a long service life.
