  • The Swiss football pitches are to be converted to LED lamps.
  • Together with the Federal Office of Energy (BFE) and the Professional Association of the Lighting Industry (FVP), the Swiss Football Association (SFV) is launching this energy-saving project.

The target is over 2,000 playing fields that are still equipped with conventional lighting. Clubs and communities should equip these with LED systems over the next five years, as the SFV reports. According to him, this reduces power consumption by 70 percent compared to conventional lighting.

“I think sustainability is everyone’s responsibility today and is also the responsibility of every organization – especially an organization as large as the football association,” says SFV central president Dominique Blanc to the “Tagesschau”. By switching to LED lighting, the 2,000 football pitches could save as much electricity annually as 4,800 households use on average over the same period.

Communities and associations save millions

Municipalities and associations can claim 350 francs per replaced light for the change. You must submit an application for a contribution before the renovation work begins. Only LED lights are permitted during renovation. There are also technical conditions.

In a first phase, the conversion of 500 floodlight systems is intended to save electricity equivalent to the average consumption of 1,200 households. Over a 25-year lifespan of the LED lights, communities and clubs save around 26 million francs in energy costs.
