AMD processors have no real competition in the HEDT segment and the release of the new Threadripper drives home the point.

At exactly $9,999 recommended price by its manufacturer, AMD, the Threadripper PRO 7995WX has almost no chance of finding a place in your next PC.

It constitutes the very high end of AMD’s HEDT – processors for workstations – segment, but that shouldn’t stop us from dreaming a little when taking a look at its performance.

96 cores/192 threads and 384 MB L3 cache

Since it has been available for a few days, this Threadripper PRO 7995WX has indeed been on everyone’s lips due to the technical characteristics. At 96 cores/192 threads, it is far ahead of its Intel counterpart.

Consider that the beefiest Xeon – the W9-3495X – has to make do with 56 cores/112 threads. All the other characteristics are consistent with an L3 cache of only 105 MB compared to 384 MB at AMD and even the operating frequencies are in favor of the Threadripper at 2.5/5.1 GHz in base/boost when the Xeon W9 -3495X is limited to 1.9/4.8 GHz.

Obviously, AMD’s new baby is a monster and this is felt in terms of performance with, as a base, a score of 118,642 points on Cinebench R23 when cooled in a “conventional” way.

More than 200,000 points on Cinebench R23

Yes, because such a monster requires “heavy” cooling and if combined with a watercooling kit, the Threadripper PRO 7995WX reaches a score of 148,053 points, still on Cinebench R23.

But the prowess of the AMD processor goes much further and several overclocking experts have decided to go even higher. Pairing the Threadripper PRO 7995WX with liquid nitrogen cooling achieves 177,050 stitches. A few days ago, AMD announced a “world record” with 184,028 points.

A record quickly surpassed by ElmorLabs which shattered this mark with 201,501 points! The Threadripper PRO 7995WX then swallowed 1,580 watts, but if you were wondering what the Xeon W9-3495X gives, our colleagues at VideoCardz have the answer: it is exceeded by 52% by the AMD CPU while consuming significantly more (1,880 watts).
