2022: Cancellation button and shorter notice periods

The year 2022 brings important improvements for consumers: the cancellation button and shorter notice periods.

Cancellation button

The consumer advice center Rhineland-Palatinate points out an important innovation that will come for consumers in 2022: the online cancellation button. This means: Companies that offer the conclusion of term contracts on their website must also set up a cancellation button on their websites from July 1, 2022.

From 1.7. Conveniently terminate contracts concluded online using this button. This eliminates the often tedious detour via other communication channels such as letter, fax or e-mail. According to the consumer advocates, this applies to all possible types of term contracts, for example for membership in the gym or for a magazine subscription.

Details on the design of the cancellation button can be found here.

Notice period of only 1 month

Also practical: shorter notice periods apply to contracts concluded from March 1, 2022. After the minimum contract term has expired, you can cancel within one month and you are no longer automatically bound for another year if you forget to cancel in good time before the contract term expires.

The 1-month notice period has been in effect for a longer period of time for internet and mobile phone contracts, you can read more about this here: Canceling an internet contract after 1 month – this is possible under these conditions. This one-month notice period is just one of the many innovations in the new version of the Telecommunications Act (TKG), which came into force on December 1, 2021. Our overview of the innovations:

From December 1st: This now applies to Internet, telephony, change of provider, new and old contracts

You can also claim your money back now if your Internet access is too slow. You can read more about this in these messages:

Telephone advertising

From May 28, 2022, companies that advertise by phone must document the express consent of the person called and keep this consent for five years, as the consumer advocates write. Violations can result in fines. This should better protect you from unwanted advertising calls.
