The boycott of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar is much more popular in Germany than in France. Indeed, the Germans are not all at the rendezvous behind their TV, even when the players of the Nationalmannschaft are playing matches. Calls for a boycott were much more numerous across the Rhine than in France.

The boycott of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar seems to be much more followed across the Rhine than in France. There would indeed be a real disaffection on the part of viewers even when the national team plays a game.

An unprecedented trend

While the players of the Nationalmannschaft will try to qualify for the round of 16 this Thursday evening against Costa Rica, not sure that the fans will be there behind their TV. And this trend is unprecedented because the comparison with the audiences four years ago in Germany during the last World Cup is clear.

Many calls for a boycott in Germany

How is this explained? The German team have won only one game since 2014 after their victory in Brazil. The disinterest had therefore been under way for a while already. Then, repeated calls for a boycott in the country, much more than in France, would have finished discouraging potential viewers.
