A man filed a complaint on Monday evening for the theft of his bag containing USB keys and a laptop. Problem, they were storing security elements from the Paris 2024 Olympics.
We will say that these are things that happen, but in these circumstances, and given the level of cyber threat in the country, very high, and less than 150 days before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the news is difficult. Monday evening, an engineer working for the capital’s town hall was robbed of a bag containing a computer and two USB keys, inside which were security plans for the Summer Olympics.
The town hall engineer, robbed, immediately informed the police of the contents of the bag
Late Monday afternoon, a Paris town hall employee boarded a train to reach Creil, parked on platform number 18 of the Gare du Nord, in the tenth arrondissement of Paris. While his train is delayed and he prepares to leave it to join another, the engineer notices that his bag has disappeared.
He later indicated that he had placed the latter in the dedicated luggage compartment, located just above his seat. Barely a few dozen minutes later, the man entered the station police station, around 7:30 p.m., to report the theft and file a complaint.
But above all, he takes the opportunity to detail the contents of the bag, which are rather sensitive. And that’s the problem.
Sensitive information directly linked to the Paris Olympics
Inside the bag, we find a laptop and two USB sticks. The engineer explains that these store sensitive information, directly linked to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will start in 149 days in the capital.
The documents in question are in fact plans for securing the Olympic Games, relating to the system of the Paris municipal police, which plans to deploy 2,000 members on site. Suffice it to say that the elements must be taken into consideration, especially in the case where they would have fallen into “real” bad hands (in the sense that the act would have been premeditated with knowledge of what the devices could contain, what ‘we don’t know at this stage). In the meantime, the regional transport police took charge of the investigation.
The train is, as we know, particularly risky for personal belongings, which it is better to keep an eye on at all times. A computer with an open session while you get a coffee in the bar car, a bag too far from you, an impromptu nap… It’s better to avoid all of this if you’re traveling solo.
