A 21-year-old Syrian was on Friday in Salzburg before the judge on suspicion of terrorism. The refugee is said to have hired himself out as a guard for a terrorist organization.

An officer with an explosives detection dog combs through hearing room 230, in which a 21-year-old Syrian will later take a seat. Another policeman uses a mirror to look under the benches. The young man, who was led into the room a little later by burly and masked prison guards from the task force, is said to have hired himself out for the Islamist Al-Nusra Front in Syria. The indictment accuses him of conducting propaganda for the terrorist organization and also having completed training as a guard. He is later said to have served in the organization for two years. The Al-Nusra Front emerged from and broke away from Osama Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda terrorist network. In the Syrian civil war, thousands of their fighters fought against the Syrian government troops. Their goal was the establishment of an Islamist state. When the man fled to Europe, his journey came to an abrupt end at the border with Germany. The police confiscated his cell phone. The officers found images on the device showing the man in uniform and with an assault rifle. The 21-year-old confessed and said he regretted his actions. Most recently, the man lived on basic needs. The jury will decide who is guilty later this afternoon.
