After countless war movies in recent years, an ambitious war series awaits us in 2023 that is meant to surpass anything that has come before. Find out why you absolutely should see “Masters of the Air” here.
22 years after Band of Brothers – considered by some to be the best war series of all time – and 13 years after The Pacific, its equally successful sequel, it’s Masters of the Air’s turn to complete this trilogy serial produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
Like the previous two, Masters of the Air is an upcoming WWII series. More specifically, it will follow the pilots of the 100th Air Refueling Wing, a unit of the United States Air Forces in Europe. And it’s based on the 2007 book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
As one can guess from its title, the series will focus on aerial combat. And between the public and critical success of the two previous series and that of Top Gun: Maverick last summer, in other words, expectations for a great show are high.
Great show awaited
Masters of the Air is the third World War II series produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. And for this third opus, they offer themselves a casting of choice with Austin Butler (Elvis, Dune 2) and Barry Keoghan (The Eternals, The Batman). The series will tell the heroic story of the brave young pilots who risked their lives to fight the German army in the sky.
It will focus on aerial combat, but since Spielberg and Hanks created their previous two WWII series, filmmaking techniques have evolved greatly, especially in terms of realism.
Several successful films, such as Dunkirk, Top Gun: Maverick or Devotion, have distinguished themselves for their incredibly realistic flight sequences. Most of these scenes were filmed from the air aboard real fighter jets.

We know that much of Top Gun: Maverick is real. Joseph Kosinski, the director, did not hesitate to put his actors, and therefore Tom Cruise, in real planes and in full flight. Only small detail, it was not Tom Cruise who piloted.
But the absence of digital special effects in these recent films featuring dogfights has particularly raised the bar. And Masters of the Air must meet those expectations to ensure its success.
Apple TV+ won the rights to adapt the book and will therefore broadcast Masters of the Air. The platform has not yet unveiled an official trailer, but we have a first glimpse of the series thanks to the video above which announces its various projects for the 2023-2024 season.
Look closely and you’ll see Austin Butler as Major Gale Cleven as he and his companions soar into the greatest conflict in world history.
