Little worried about health rules, an American summer camp has 260 infected. Half of the young people showed mild symptoms and then tested positive for covid-19.

Who says summer camp means going to get some fresh air and get away from it all. However, in the midst of a pandemic, it is important to respect health rules. Widely impacted by the coronavirus, the United States continues to multiply clusters. On June 17, covid-19 infected 260 of 597 participants at a summer camp in the state of Georgia. News that frightens the directors of collective centers.

A colony transformed into a Covid-19 cluster

Despite recommendations from the CDC (Center for Disease Prevention and Control) that all participants should wear a mask, a summer camp has decided to ignore them and now has a heavy toll. In fact, 287 of the 597 participants were infected following the onset of symptoms from a staff member. The latter left the colony after having felt chills the day before. He then tested positive for coronavirus.

However, the center had obeyed a decree from the state of Georgia requiring all participants to test negative for covid-19, up to 12 days before departure. There were also other measures to consider, including physical distancing and frequent disinfection of surfaces. Unfortunately, this was not enough to spare the contamination of children who engaged in various activities opening the field to a possible spread of the virus. Indeed, they slept in cabins that can accommodate nearly 26 people and indulged in singing indoors. The camp began dismissing its participants on June 24 before closing its doors for good on June 27.

Asymptomatic patients but decisive in the spread of the virus

74% of people had mild symptoms such as fever, headache and sore throat, the rest had no symptoms. The CDC reminds that children are not invincible to the virus. Indeed, children of any age can be infected with covid-19 and could play a key role in the transmission of the virus.

In France, summer camps are allowed despite the crisis, on condition that health rules such as social distancing of a minimum of one meter, wearing masks and frequent hand washing are respected. In terms of activities, it is important to organize small group games of no more than 15 children per group. So don't panic! If the sanitary rules are respected, you can send your little ones peacefully on vacation.
