Ragnhild Mowinckel scores her first downhill World Cup victory in Cortina. Jacqueline Wiles is also surprised.

The podium

  • 1. Ragnhild Mowinckel (NOR) 1:33.50 minutes
  • 2. Jacqueline Wiles (USA) +0.35
  • 3. Sofia Goggia (ITA) +0.44

Ragnhild Mowinckel scored a real coup in the second descent from Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Norwegian surprisingly drove to her first World Cup victory in the premier discipline with start number 20. She took 44 hundredths off discipline leader Sofia Goggia.

Goggia had legitimate hopes of triumphing in front of the home crowd. Only shortly after Mowinckel’s journey she was even deprived of second place: Jacqueline Wiles also raced onto the podium with start number 26 behind the winner. The American had already finished third in Cortina 6 years ago. But she has never been better in the World Cup before.

Both Mowinckel and Wiles only started the race after a half-hour break. This was necessary after 17 riders due to the gusty wind in the upper part of the route.

The Swiss women

The two surprise riders pushed Lara Gut-Behrami off the podium. The Ticino native, who was a good second on Friday, was relegated to fifth place with Stephanie Venier. The 32-year-old placed better in the demanding delta curve, where she missed the approach. Gut-Behrami ultimately missed the podium by 27 hundredths. Jasmine Flury, who lost a significant amount of time in the lower part of the route, did not make it into the top 10, like Priska Nufer, who fell on Friday.

Hählen also injured?

Michelle Gisin, who was also one of the victims of the fall the day before, decided not to start due to pain in her right lower leg. She will also be missing in Sunday’s Super-G. For the Joana Hählen could also join the Swiss hospital. The Bernese woman ended her ride early after a jump. She received a severe blow to her right knee when she landed. Medical examinations should show whether and how badly the knee was affected.

Another violent fall

Although work had been carried out in various places before the second descent to defuse the pitfalls of the “Tofana”, another athlete took off spectacularly. Isabella Wright was caught in the same place as Gisin and Nufer on Friday. The American had to be transported away by helicopter. According to SRF information from the US team, Wright escaped with a cut on his chin.

This is how it continues

The program concludes on Sunday in Cortina with a Super-G. During the week, the Women’s World Cup continues with a giant slalom in Kronplatz (South Tyrol). The race takes place on Tuesday (live on SRF).
