3-1 victory in the playoff final – Servette dethrones FCZ and wins the championship title – Sport

  • The championship title in the Women’s Super League goes to Servette Chênois Feminin.
  • The Genevans deservedly won a hard-fought final 3-1.
  • For the FCZ women, it is the first defeat since the introduction of the playoff mode in 2021.

It was a symbolic scene: When Servette goalkeeper and birthday girl Ines Pereira sat down on the grass in injury time – apparently suffering from cramps – the Zurich team became really angry. The players and referee Desirée Grundbacher needed to talk. This had been the case throughout the entire match.

Mauron escapes the FCZ defense

In an extremely intense and at times (too) tough game, it was the Genevans who had the better edge from the start. The opening goal in the 22nd minute was both deserved and beautifully played: After a set piece, Sandrine Mauron escaped the FCZ defense and scored with a direct shot to make it 1-0.

The women from Calvinstadt continued to set the tone. After an excursion by FCZ goalkeeper Noemi Benz, Therese Simonsson had a free shot, but the ball went just over the goal. Contrary to the run of play, the Zurich team equalized before the break. Seraina Piubel skilfully broke through on the left, and Chiara Bücher was finally able to convert her cross thanks to rigorous follow-up.

The 1:1 gave Jacqueline Dünker’s team a boost – at least for a short time. Romy Baraniak’s shot (48th minute) posed no problems for Servetter goalkeeper Pereira, who was playing her last game for Servette. Servette took the lead again practically immediately: Cassandra Korhonen confidently converted a flat pass from the right.

Servette makes everything clear with counterattack

Numerous fouls and niggles later, it was Rimante Jonusaite who scored after a counterattack to make it 3-1 (83′). FCZ was then unable to react. FCZ veteran Fabienne Humm, whose glorious career ended with this playoff final, was also unable to turn things around after being substituted on after around an hour.

While the Geneva women can celebrate their first championship title since 2021 under coach Jose Barcala, the FCZ women have to leave the field as losers in a playoff game for the first time after 14 consecutive wins. Since the introduction of the new format, the Zurich women have not lost a playoff game and have won the championship in the last two years.
