Again and again in the last few weeks, St. Gallen had given away points because of late goals. But on this 12th matchday, the eastern Swiss turned the tables – of all things at the “fear opponent” Lucerne (there has not been an FCSG victory there since December 2019). Joker Julian von Moos took a shot from around 18 meters in a spiteful final phase and with the 3:3 made sure that the FCSG did not concede their 3rd defeat in the last 4 games. Emmanuel Latte Lath even had the winning goal for the guests on his feet, but failed in the final minute at Lucerne goalie Marius Müller.
In regular time, the main focus was on Müller’s opponent: Once again, Lawrence Ati Zigi alternated between genius and madness. At first he drove the Lucerne offensive to despair, but in the 55th minute he tackled Dejan Sorgic in his own penalty area – without any need, because from an acute angle. Max Meyer gratefully accepted the penalty gift and scored to make it 3:2.
Lots of mistakes, lots of goals
A highly spectacular first half, which also featured hair-raising defensive failures, ended 2-2. Already in the 7th minute, the St. Gallen, who are actually known as quick starters, had to accept the 0:1. After a technically strong take on the chest, Pius Dorn put the ball across to Mohamed Dräger, who netted from close range. However, Lucerne’s lead only lasted 107 seconds. Then Latte Lath danced out Marco Burch on the half-right with a hook and hit the far corner to make it 1-1.
The “Lights” were not deterred by this and had numerous good opportunities against a shaky “Espen” defence. But as has often been the case recently, there was a lack of efficiency. Burch (24′) failed with a header like Dräger (28′) on Zigi, who reacted with lightning speed. A minute earlier, Dräger had shot past the St. Gallen goal from close range.
So two gifts were needed to score a goal on each side before the break whistle:
- 40 minutes: After a disastrous misguided pass by Burch, the ball lands at Jérémy Guillemenot. He sinks the ball from the edge of the penalty area, cold and flat, into the far corner – 2:1.
- 44 minutes: St. Gallen’s defensive is now also in a giving mood. Patrick Sutter’s back pass to goalie Zigi falls far short. Dräger grabs the ball and puts together the brace relatively unchallenged.
And because, as is well known, one or the other mistake continued after the change of sides, the spectacle had two more goals, but no winner ready. So the teams remain in the 4th (Lucerne) and 5th (SG) league game de suite without a complete success. While St. Gallen is still not in a very jubilant mood during the Olma period, Lucerne also failed to smooth the waves in the turbulent times surrounding the “Causa Alpstaeg”, at least on a sporting level.
This is how it goes
Lucerne will host FC Lugano at home on Saturday (8:30 p.m. live on SRF). St. Gallen also have a home game against Servette on Sunday.
