  • Eiza González and Jovan Adepo play two of the main roles in the new Netflix series “3 Body Problem”. We interviewed her exclusively.
  • To describe the sci-fi series, Eiza González uses “Dune,” “Interstellar,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Arrival” as comparisons.
  • She also humorously points out that Jovan Adepo only agreed because he thought González’s role would be played by Penélope Cruz.

The new series from “Game of Thrones” creators DB Weiss and David Benioff has finally started on Netflix. The sci-fi series is an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Trisolaris trilogy. At the start of “3 Body Problem” we were able to speak exclusively to the stars of the series in interviews and ask some exciting questions.

In conversation with “Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw” star Eiza González and “Welcome to Derry” actor Jovan Adepo, González gives us a good description of what fans can expect with “3 Body Problem”: “It’s kind of like ‘Interstellar’ meets ‘Arrival’ meets ‘Dune’ meets ‘Game of Thrones’ meets ‘Ready Player One’.”

Who do Adepo and González play in “3 Body Problem”?

Eiza González plays a successful scientist, Augustina “Auggie” Salazar. Jovan Adepo plays a less ambitious physicist named Saul Durand. While Auggie chose business, Saul stayed in science. They both have a little romance going on, but it only slowly catches fire.

Starting with the question of what attracted the two stars to the series, Adepo emphasized that it was a mix of the story and the people with whom he was allowed to collaborate, including of course the “Game of Thrones” creators DB Weiss and David Benioff: “You definitely can’t miss an opportunity like this!”

Eiza González also agrees: “I would be stupid not to want to be there.” González also jokes that Adepo only agreed “because he thought Penélope Cruz would play and not [sie]”.

Oscar winner Penélope Cruz

Penélope Cruz is a Spanish actress who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”. She is also known from films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”, “Ferrari” and “Vanilla Sky” with Tom Cruise.

In her role, González finds herself reflected primarily in Auggie’s hot-headed nature, but also in her passion for her work, “the fire that she feels for her craft.” Things were different for Jovan Adepo.

While his role feels a certain aimlessness, he says he knows pretty well where he wants to go: “I’ve always prided myself on being incredibly ambitious and driven, sometimes too much, almost obsessive. So I just appreciate the opportunity “To get to play someone so different than myself and, as Eiza mentioned, to have the opportunity to live a life that is both simple and complex.”

It’s the little things that make the series special

When I thought about the script, and I mean that in a positive way, I realized how human it was. What I mean by that is that we often do pretty mundane things on the show. And it was terrifying because I was expecting something more “sci-fi” like I was used to in the books, but then I realized “Oh wow, this is totally brilliant!” Because they are relatable people and even the simplest things, relationships like the one between Saul and Auggie, can be found again and again, which is more of a “situationship”. It’s something everyone can relate to […]. It humanizes Saul and Auggie in a way that gives us the basics to work with.

Eiza Gonzalez

For Eiza González, these everyday moments and situations that can be found in the series are what make it so attractive. It may be a science fiction story with a lot of scientific and technical details and concepts, but “the authors have found a great balance between humanity and the complexity of the story.”

For her as an actress, these technical and scientific concepts in sci-fi productions are also less interesting: “This has already been done for you as an actor, the story, the relationships, the friendships are already [von den Autoren] fixed.”

Therefore, on an artistic level, she found potential to develop as an actress, mainly in the calm scenes: “That was really interesting, because in our personal space we were able to achieve a lot on an emotional level.”
