  • “3 Body Problem” is the new sci-fi highlight from Netflix. A “Star Trek” star also plays in the series.
  • We spoke exclusively in an interview with Rosalind Chao, known as Keiko O’Brien from “Deep Space Nine” and “The Next Century”.
  • She tells us why she believes “3 Body Problem” is a must-see for “Star Trek” fans.

Netflix is bringing a new science fiction epic to television screens with “3 Body Problem”. Among others, “Star Trek” veteran Rosalind Chao, who played the role of Keiko O’Brien, wife of Chief Miles O’Brien, in “Star Trek: The Next Century” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” ( Colm Meaney).

In “3 Body Problem” she plays the role of Ye Wenjie. In flashbacks, the role is played by the younger actress Zine Tseng. We interviewed both actresses and Chao is sure: “[‘Star Trek’-Fans] I’d be crazy not to watch the series!”

Rosalind Chao first gives a big recommendation to all “Star Trek” fans. “I think it’s really like real ‘Star Trek’. People are going to love it!” She then emphasizes that “Star Trek” fans have great imaginations. “Trek fans are my favorite,” she clarifies.

I don’t really like the word ‘Trekkies’ because of some of the negative connotations, but you have a great imagination. And it’s exactly for people like you [‘3 Body Problem’] tailor-made!

Rosalind Chao

Compared to the “Star Trek” universe, Chao finds “3 Body Problem” to be a little more perfect: “It’s almost as if ‘Star Trek’ had graduated from university.”

The opportunities and challenges when two actresses play the same role

Since Rosalind Chao and Zine Tseng embody the same role in different periods of life, the two stars obviously have to coordinate to create one character together and not two completely different ones.

“I think Ros [Kurzform von Rosalind] took on all the difficulties,” says Zine Tseng, “and it was magical […] and seemed super easy and relaxed for her. She came in and said, ‘Sure, I’ll do it!'”

Visibly flattered by Tseng’s words, Chao immediately returns the compliments: “While she once again laid the foundation! I saw all the work that Zine had put in before. That made me even more excited!”

“Because she created a character that was so nuanced and so complex at the same time that she kind of gave me a complete meal and all I had to do was eat,” Chao adds.

Zine Tseng: “I’m a big fan of the books”

While Zine Tseng admits to being a “big fan of the books” – “3 Body Problem” is based on the first volume of the Trisolaris trilogy by Liu Cixin – Rosalind Chao admits that she had not read the books beforehand.

“We had a dialect coach who taught me a little about the Chinese accent,” reveals Chao. “He was from China and looked at me like a car when I said I didn’t know the books. His name was Sun Yan And he was really strict! […] He said, ‘You have to read it, Ros! You have to read them all in a week!’ And well, I listened to him.”

However, she didn’t really listen to her strict dialect coach when she whispered to us that she hadn’t quite managed to read the books in a week. However, she was able to read at least the sections about her character in this one week.
