3 Body Problem Season 2: Series makers promise – The new episodes of the Netflix series will be wild

3 BODY PROBLEM

“3 Body Problem” is considered unfilmable. Nevertheless, the producers of the Netflix series dared to do the impossible. Now they are teasing a wild storyline for the second season.

  • “3 Body Problem” is the Netflix series adaptation of Cixin Liu’s “Trisolaris” trilogy.
  • After a successful first season, the question now arises as to whether a second season will follow.
  • For the extension, the makers promise in a new interview that the plot in season 2 will be “wild”.

Nothing excites David Benioff and DB Weiss more than a book that is considered unfilmable. They had already brought “Game of Thrones” to television very successfully – at least until they ran out of novels and the quality dropped massively – and now the two showrunners are daring to tackle their next ambitious project.

The Netflix series “3 Body Problem” is based on the “Trisolaris” trilogy by Cixin Liu. In the best case scenario, there would be three seasons, one season per book. But how safe is the sequel and what can we expect in season 2?

At this point, shortly after the start of “3 Body Problem” Season 1, Netflix has not yet decided on the fate of the series. With a budget of $20 million per episode, the sci-fi series from the “Game of Thrones” creators must prove to be a hit to justify further sequels.

A high ranking in the Netflix Top 10 is not enough to be considered a great success. If Netflix confirms a second season, it is probably not expected until 2026.

Since “3 Body Problem” is an adaptation of a novel, the further course of the story has already been determined. However, the plot of the books was not adopted 1:1, the narrative order was partly changed and the focus in the books is on Chinese characters, and a large part of the plot also takes place in China.

However, the core of the “Trisolaris” trilogy remains in the Netflix series and so season 2 would probably deal with the plot of “The Dark Forest”, the second book in the trilogy. This is mainly about the Wallfacer program, which was introduced and explained in the last episode of the first season.

Although the Earth is spied on by the two Sophons of the San-Ti, the aliens cannot read people’s minds. The San-Ti are in constant intellectual communication with each other, so the concept of secrets and lies is foreign to them.

The Wallfacers should therefore each develop a plan for themselves on how to defeat the San-Ti. If they keep their plan secret, the Sophons cannot act. In season 2, the focus is primarily on Saul Durand, who has to come to terms with his position as a wallfacer.

In addition, the San-Ti want to disrupt the Wallfacer program by sending some of their human followers, called Wallbreakers, to attack the Wallfacers. As “The Dark Forest” progresses, the plot jumps further into the future, which means we have to say goodbye to some characters.

3 Body Problem: Cast

The cast of the second season of “3 Body Problem” is currently unknown. However, it can be assumed that a large part of the main cast will return.

3 Body Problem: Production

“3 Body Problem” is based on the “Trisolaris” trilogy by Cixin Liu and was adapted as a series by DB Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo for Netflix. The creators also want to work together again for the potential second season, but according to Weiss, the production of the series brings with it some creative problems that could be particularly noticeable in the second season.

In order to make the plot understandable to a wide audience, some adjustments had to be made to “3 Body Problem”. Certain scientific processes or elements of Chinese culture had to be explained.

We didn’t want the audience to take a break and go to Wikipedia every five minutes. You could make a version that makes people do exactly that, but it takes them out of the story. In the book all these things are explained in writing. It was one of the challenges that ultimately motivated us to take on the project.

The first season is therefore slightly different than the original book. But according to Wiess, “This makes it easier to get into the world of the story, but the plot becomes [in Staffel 2] really wild in the best possible way.”

With something this wild, there are a lot of decisions to be made and a lot of things to figure out. We’ve been working hard on this recently, especially in the last few months. Out of necessity, most of the cast must speak primarily English. However, we largely retained the Chinese flashbacks. This gave us the opportunity to tell a global story. Either humanity comes together to face an existential threat or it doesn’t.
