Women politicians denounce the omnipresence, in French politics, of men accused of harassment and violence without being in any way worried. This call in the form of a petition for a #MeToo in politics alerts in particular to the 2022 presidential election.

Monday, November 15, 2021, a petition was launched on the World website and on “For a #MeTooPolitique”, a dedicated platform. 285 women in politics call “the political world to a large-scale response to sexual and gender-based violence committed by our representatives”. The objective of this variation of the #MeToo hashtag: to stimulate real awareness, which will have concrete consequences for the men targeted by complaints for sexual or gender-based violence.

The petition mentions in particular “three candidates for the Élysée” cited in numerous testimonies of sexual assault. Gold, “This does not prevent them, far from it, from considering that they are worthy to occupy the supreme magistracy. This is to say to what extent the condition of women and victims is indifferent to them”, underlines the text.

Elected officials accused or even condemned for violence against women

Without naming them, we easily recognize the men mentioned: Éric Zemmour, Jean Lassalle, François Asselineau. For the first, there are no complaints filed, but seven testimonies of women collected by Médiapart who tell of sexual assault. Jean Lassalle for his part was cited at the time of #BalanceTonPorc as a “sticky”, “sticky” deputy with women. The elected official even partially acknowledged the facts, pleading never to have wanted to harm these women and arguing again that no complaint has been filed against him to date. Finally, François Asselineau was indicted for harassment and sexual assault in February 2021.

“Today, among the 577 deputies, some are perpetrators of gender-based and sexual violence”, recalls the forum, stressing the systemic aspect of this violence and a real culture of impunity. “Within the Parliament, town halls, departmental and regional councils, men implicated, sometimes convicted, for rape, for sexual assault, for sexual assault on a minor, for domestic violence are elected”, can we also read.
If Jean Lassalle and François Asselineau have publicly declared themselves candidates for the presidential election of 2022, this is not yet the case for Eric Zemmour, who is nevertheless omnipresent on the political and media scene today.
