3 promotions in 6 years – A 5th season in the upper house as a reward for Yverdon – Sport

Contents

Yverdon will play in the Super League next season. This idea was completely unrealistic 7 years ago.

Yverdon Sport is back in the top Swiss division. From the coming season, the opponents of the Waadtländer Young Boys will be Basel or Servette. You will have to get used to that on Lake Neuchâtel. Because not too long ago you played against teams like Lancy, Azzurri 90 or Naters Oberwallis.

From 2013 to 2017, the 1st Liga Classic – the fourth highest Swiss division – was home to Yverdon. In the summer of 2017, under coach Anthony Braizat, they were promoted to the Promotion League. But it quickly became obvious that this league would only be a transit station.

Great League, here we come!

Next season Yverdon will be in the Super League for the second time since 2005/06.

From Aeby via Forte to Schällibaum

Yverdon was third in the first year and second in the second year. And when everything pointed to promotion to the Challenge League in the 3rd year, the season was canceled at the end of April 2020 due to the corona pandemic. The people of Vaud had to wait another year before they could celebrate the next promotion in summer 2021 under coach Jean-Michel Aeby.

ascension trainer

24 years after his former teammate Lucien Favre, Marco Schällibaum also led Yverdon to the top flight.

Season number 1 in the Challenge League ended Yverdon under Uli Forte – he had already replaced Aeby after 3 rounds – in 8th place. With the current coach Marco Schällibaum, the «White-Greens» tackled the 2022/23 season. Almost a year later, this should culminate sensationally in the 3rd ascent within 6 years.

The ascent to the 75th anniversary

Now, after 17 years, Yverdon Sport is back in the House of Lords – and this for the 4th time. In 1993/94 you could only stay up for one season, from 1999 to 2001 at least for 2 seasons. The last guest appearance in 2005/06 ended after a year.

The celebrations in the coming weeks are likely to be excessive. After all, there is not only the promotion to the Super League. Yverdon Sport also celebrates its 75th club anniversary in July.

The Favre era and the 2001 cup final

In addition to the 4 promotions to the NLA and the Super League, Yverdon Sport also has a cup highlight to show for itself. After victories over FCZ and arch-rival Lausanne-Sport, among others, Yverdon qualified for the cup final in 2001. There, however, Servette was too strong under coach Lucien Favre and won 3-0 in St. Jakob-Park.

This was a special success for Favre, as he had trained very successfully at Yverdon from January 1997 to 2000. During this time, the now 65-year-old trainer Fuchs not only managed to get promoted to the NLA, but also achieved the best ranking of the Vaud people in the highest league in the following season with 5th place.

More than 20 years after the Favre era, Yverdon is now returning to the Swiss top flight under Schällibaum, who played with Favre at Servette from 1987 to 1991. How long is Yverdon staying this time?
