Discovered in March at the Series Mania festival and rightly rewarded with a prize for the performance of its three main actresses, this singular musical comedy finally arrives on our screens. Hanane celebrates her baccalaureate there with a fanfare (literally), before experiencing a family drama. She will then lead her best friends, her “Reusss”, Ambre and Maïssa, in a somewhat dangerous investigation to discover the truth. Vibrant songs and choreography
Characters who suddenly dance on every street corner, sung dialogues whatever the occasion, an omnipresent melody… If musicals color your lives, you should clearly not be disoriented by Success. But the new teen series from France TV Slash has a little particularity: mixing the classics in a way Ladies of Rochefort to catchy rap and RnB beats. Watching the ten episodes of this first season, you will regularly find yourself repeating the tunes sung by the characters, as they immediately captivate our ears.
The choreographies, imagined by Cathy Ematchoua (who has worked with MIA and Christine and the Queens), wonderfully complement the songs in the series, once again happily mixing classical dance steps and hip hop movements. The musical sequences are therefore pleasing, punctuating situations that are sometimes yet banal with a crazy originality. Always justified, these irresistible numbers always sublimate the questions of the characters who interpret them, in amorous, friendly or more serious registers. A total of 21 songs and 24 choreographies accompany the ten episodes of Success. A challenge for this small French series, taken up by a team as brilliant as it is inspiring, made up in particular of French rappers Brav and Demi-Portion, himself from Sète.
A trio of badass actresses
At the heart of Successthere are three phenomenal actresses, three names that we strongly advise you to remember: Inès Ouchaaou, Assa Sylla (Girl band, SKAM France) and Charlie Loiselier (Marianne). Perfectly complementary, the energies of these three actresses mingle in this solar fiction which highlights their talents with great benevolence. As formidable in acting, singing or dancing, this trio of badass actresses bursts the screen with every second of Success.
Inès Ouchaaou, Assa Sylla and Charlie Loiselier are thus the revelations of this musical series, composing touching, endearing but above all really complex teenagers. It is rare to find such a level of audacity in female characters, all the more so when they are teenagers and all the more so on French television. Hanane, Ambre and Maïssa are thus totally comfortable in their sneakers, in their sexualities and in their personalities, and it feels great to see that on the small screen. Episode 7 is notably a nugget around self-affirmation, female solidarity and patriarchal emancipation, all on acidic rhythms to integrate into your next playlist. We are fans.
Captivating storylines
As modern as it is original, Success adopts a unique tone, which can destabilize, by mixing opposite universes with mischief. Between Agatha Christie-style investigation, teen drama, family story, comedy and romance, the series never ceases to amaze, renew itself and develop its narrative. An extravagant and inimitable bias, which allows Success to approach relatively conventional themes such as the power of friendship while asserting itself on less traditional intrigues. Depression, internalized homophobia, toxic relationships, female pleasure, ordinary sexism or the difficulties of life in the suburbs are thus alternately highlighted with rather rare nuances in French teenage series.
Obviously, Success does not escape a few clichés, but these missteps are not enough to tarnish the brilliance of this feminist and flamboyant musical comedy. From the viewing of the first episodes at the Series Mania festival, the creation of France TV Slash had been an immediate crush, which amazes as much as it gives the fishing.
