Series Anatomy of a Divorcea feminist satire of straight relationships

Toby and Rachel Fleishman just divorced after 15 years of marriage. A real earthquake that turns their respective lives upside down, and especially that of Toby. And for good reason: Rachel has just disappeared overnight, leaving her their two children, aged 9 and 11, in the middle of the night. To understand this gesture, the quarantine will have to inspect the history of their marriage and the reasons for its failure.

If you’ve been dreaming of a slice of life à la Woody Allen, a feminist version, you’ve come to the right place. Released in February 2023, Anatomy of a Divorce is already one of the best series of the year and offers a fresh look at heterosexual romantic relationships. This dramatic comedy distils its cynicism in every scene, thanks to a satirical voice-over and an impressive narrative mastery.

If Toby appears to be the main protagonist, Anatomy of a Divorce Little by little opens our eyes to her real subject: the too long forgotten point of view of women on their marriages but also their roles as mothers.

In addition to being a writing success, the 8-episode mini-series owes a lot to its golden cast: Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Claire Danes (Homeland), Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Adam Brody (Newport Beach) or Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother). In short, you would be wrong to miss this clever, ironic miniseries that will help you take stock of your own romantic relationships, disastrous or not.

  • Watch if you liked: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend; I Love Dick; This is Us
  • Must see if you are looking for: love ; satire; feminist themes; drama ; humor ; story of a divorce; group of friends ; midlife crisis; daily in New York; adaptation of a book; Voice off ; long episodes; Woody Allen movies (much better)

Series The Patienta face-to-face between a serial killer and his shrink

Have you ever wondered if you could ever tip over and kill someone in cold blood? If yes, The Patient will probably answer some of your questions. At the unlikely crossroads between Dahmerwhich was a hit on Netflix, and the French creation In Therapy, the series depicts the implacable face-to-face between a therapist, Alan Strauss, taken hostage by Sam, one of his patients with a tendency to serial killer. His goal ? Stop the murders by locking up his psychologist in his basement for personalized sessions.

Icing on this already very sweet cake: this duel is embodied by Steve Carell (The Office) and Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars, Ex-Machina), while the series was imagined by Joe Weisberg, already creator of the saga of espionage The Americans. With all these qualities, The Patient could therefore only be a success. And this is the case, to a certain extent, since the narration unfortunately runs out of steam over the episodes. But the series still offers an exciting psychological confrontation, behind closed doors.

The Patient thus explores the roots of evil, without making a fuss about it or promising the impossible, all in short 30-minute episodes, usually reserved for comic formats. And the psychologist embodied by Steve Carell even pays for his own therapy in passing… just like us, the spectators, confronted with our (sometimes) dark ideas. A series in 10 episodes, binge for accelerated introspection.

  • Watch if you liked: Dammer; In Therapy; The Americans; Mindhunter; Dexter; Barry; You
  • Must see if you are looking for: psychological thriller; face to face ; short episodes; chills; tension ; serial killer ; well tied; family relationships; find the comforting audacity of Steve Carell

Series In Therapyfictitious psych sessions to better appease reality

Attention to sensitive souls: the two seasons ofIn Therapy will greatly test your tear resistance. Now that you have been warned, you can cry all the tears in your body in front of this Arte series, which develops the psychoanalysis of 5 different patients each season. The sessions are all led by the therapist Philippe Dayan (played by Frédéric Pierrot), a fifty-year-old who questions his practice of the profession at the same time.

The attacks of November 13, 2015, confinements, covid, divorce, school bullying… In Therapy draws on individual and collective themes to better question our own mental health. We necessarily recognize ourselves in one or more characters from the series, who expose our deepest cracks with a good dose of sensitivity.

So, of course, it may seem strange to attend consultations that are not ours, as one would look through the little keyhole. And it is, indeed, a disturbing exercise. But you really won’t regret giving this bright spot in the gloomy skies of recent news a chance. In Therapy is thus an immersion that shakes as much as it soothes our deepest ills. Do not stop at the number of episodes per season (35, all the same): each session lasts only 20 minutes and is linked at breakneck speed.

  • Watch if you liked: Shrinking ; In Treatment (US); Homecoming
  • Must see if you are looking for: drama ; to get better ; short episodes; traumas to be repaired; sob out ; free psych sessions
