30% of professional sportswomen have been harassed in the UK

The BBC has just revealed a meaningful investigation into the issue of cyberbullying which is becoming commonplace.

Almost a third (30%) of the UK's sporting elite admitted to being harassed on social media. This data is part of the largest study ever carried out by BBC Sport on women's sport. A figure that has doubled since the last survey in 2015.

The BBC's survey of British sportswomen was sent to 1,068 women in 39 different sports and 537 responses were received.

Some athletes had received inappropriate images and described the messages as "threatening" and "frightening".

Tasteful photomontages, sexist remarks, such as "go back to the kitchen", racism or grossophobia, nothing has been spared them.

"I was sent a picture of a club crest full of ironing boards and told this was the team I should be playing for." the BBC.

Through the testimonies, the revelations are appalling:

-86% of sportswomen earn less than £ 30,000 per year. This is less than the average annual gross salary in the UK in 2019, which was £ 30,629 according to data from the Office for National Statistics.

-36% do not feel supported by their club within the framework of a maternity hospital and in the rest of their career.

-4% had an abortion because they thought a baby would impact their athletic career.

-40% don't feel comfortable discussing their period with coaches.

-20% have been victims or witnesses of racism in their sport.

-65% have experienced sexism in their discipline but only 10% reported it.

-85% don't think the media is doing enough to promote women's sport, but 93% believe that media coverage has improved over the past five years.

"We have seen a lot of positive movements in women's sport over the past five years, but this survey is a stark reminder that there is still a lot to do," Tammy Parlor, CEO of the Women's Sport Trust.

On the side of France, languages are also loosening, whether in the world of skating or cycling. The culture of harassment is brought to the fore. And even within sports writing.
