30 years + $100 million + 2 parts: this monumental film by Kevin Costner reveals its first images

20 years after Open Range, Kevin Costner is back to directing with Horizon, an ambitious saga set in the 19th century. This western, which will be released in 2 parts, has revealed a short trailer.

Kevin Costner rides at full speed across a plain in the American West. Suddenly, he stopped his horse, turned around, shouldered his rifle and fired 3 times! Here’s what we can see in the very first images of the western Horizon, a new feature film directed by the Oscar-winning author of Dances with Wolves.

The teaser, which was revealed on October 5 by Warner Bros., also revealed the American release date of this new work. Note that it will be offered in two parts at the cinema. The first will arrive on June 28, 2024.

As for the second, it will be released on August 16, 2024. Contacted by us, Warner Bros. France has not confirmed the release of the diptych in France. We’ll have to be patient before we find out more about this.

After leaving the series Yellowstone after 5 seasons, Kevin Costner, 68, will therefore be able to devote himself entirely to this project which is particularly close to his heart. The actor has been trying to make it happen for over 30 years.

Initially, he wanted to stage a monumental fresco in 4 parts which was to last 11 hours in total. Obviously, the artist had to revise his copy. Indeed, Warner Bros. has not announced a 3rd or 4th film.

“I mortgaged 10 acres of beachfront land in Santa Barbara to finance this film. That’s where I was going to build my last house… I did it without thinking. It put my accountant in a fucking mess tantrum. But it’s my life and I believe in the idea and this story.”confided Kevin Costner to Deadline.

The director did not hesitate to inject his own money into the project. The budget would be 100 million dollars, 50 of which would come from the American star’s own funds.

HORIZON, WHAT WILL IT TELL?

Horizon will offer us an epic adventure with a dive into the heart of the Far West, showing us “how it was won, and lost, through blood, sweat and tears.” The work will notably cover the 4 years of the Civil War, between 1861 and 1865. However, the story will take place over 15 years, also exploring events happening before and after this conflict.

This ambitious epic led by Kevin Costner “will take audiences on an emotional journey through a country at war with itself, experienced through the prism of families, friends and enemies who will all try to discover what the United States of America really is .”

“It’s a beautiful story, but a very harsh story. It’s about women trying to get by in an incredibly harsh world. They were often dragged to these places because that’s where men wanted go; and the women followed their men.

They did not ask to be in these unstable and dangerous territories, and life was not easy. I chose to make it really obvious, that it wasn’t easy and that people were very vulnerable.”explained Kevin Costner in the columns of Variety.

WHO WILL PLAY IN HORIZON?

Kevin Costner will play the main character in the diptych. It will be accompanied by a 5-star cast! Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, Jena Malone, Will Patton, Michael Rooker, Abbey Lee, Giovanni Ribisi, Thomas Haden Church, Kathleen Quinlan and Danny Huston will be there. Note that this will be Costner’s big return to directing, 20 years after Open Range.

While waiting to know if Horizon: An American Saga will be released in the land of Molière, you can find Kevin Costner currently in season 5 of Yellowstone on Paramount +.
