After the top game in the Premier League against Manchester City (2:2) and due to the comfortable starting position after the first leg (3:1), coach Jürgen Klopp rested numerous regulars in the second comparison with Benfica Lisbon. For example, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Thiago Alcantara were not in the starting XI and only came on after the break. Liverpool mostly had the matter under control – but it wasn’t entirely without tremors.
Firmino scores twice after the change
After 65 minutes, with a score of 3: 1, everything looked like the “Reds” could easily progress. Ibrahima Konaté made it 1-0 after a header from a corner (21′). After the interim equalization of the cheeky guests, it went on break with a 1:1. After the change, it was Firmino twice (55th and 65th), who was allowed to play from the start, who increased the overall score to 6:2.
After that, Liverpool shifted down a gear and made it unintentionally exciting. Because Benfica, who never gave up, continued to play happily forward and were rewarded with the goals of Roman Yaremchuk (the goal was only awarded after VAR intervention) and Darwin Nunez, who was again strong, equalized to 3: 3 up to the 81st minute.
