In the fourth to last round of the Challenge League, Winterthur has to give up the leader position to Schaffhausen.

The race for promotion to the Challenge League turns out to be a thriller. In the fourth to last round, Winterthur did not get better than 2:2 at home against Thun. Schaffhausen landed an unchallenged 4-1 home win against bottom-placed Kriens and overtook Zurich.

Because Aarau also won 4-0 in Yverdon, the Winterthur team even fell back to third place. Schaffhausen is now level on points with Aarau at the top, Winterthur lurks one point behind.

Thun shoots the game in Winterthur

Winterthur had already taken the lead after 9 minutes through Roberto Alves. The 24-year-old scored superbly with a direct free kick. But Thun managed to turn things around before the break thanks to goals from Nicolas Hasler (17th) and Alexander Gerndt (35th).

In the second half, Winterthur threw everything forward again and actually equalized in added time. Samir Ramizi poked the ball over the line to make it 2-2 in the 94th minute. It was the end of a hectic final phase including formation of packs and several yellow cards.

Schaffhausen safe

For his part, Schaffhausen showed no weaknesses against Kriens. Nikola Gjorgiev and Augustin Gonzalez set the course for victory with a double strike just before the break. Gjorgiev (48′) and Raul Bobadilla (80′) then increased the lead to 4-0 before Kriens even managed to make up for the result.

Aarau wins in Yverdon

Aarau had to fight a little more before victory in Yverdon was certain. The decision came between the 67th and 72nd minute when the visitors pulled away to 3-0 thanks to goals from Randy Schneider and Donat Rrudhani. The home team had weakened themselves beforehand: Allan Eleouet saw the yellow-red card shortly after the change of sides.

Vaduz kept their low promotion hopes alive with a 5-2 home win over Wil. Liechtenstein are 6 points behind Barrage-place 2 with 3 rounds to go. Stade Lausanne-Ouchy lost 3-1 at home to Xamax.
