3DS and Wii U: this time it’s really the end, Nintendo puts the nail in the coffin

Over the years, old consoles Nintendo are scrapped by the manufacturer and this happens much faster than we could have hoped. Therefore, since last March, it is no longer possible to purchase content on theeShop 3DS and Wii U, while sharing images on social networks from these devices has been disabled following a more global change. This Wednesday, an announcement was made truly signing the end of life of these machines, sincein April 2024, the servers for 3DS and Wii U games will simply be shut down. Yes, while we learned last August that those of Mario Kart 8 And Splatoon were finally no longer under maintenance, it was ultimately just a reprieve.

The only “good” news concerns the players of Pokémon who will be able to continue to use the Pokémon Bank and the Poké Transferthe servers being undoubtedly directly managed by The Pokémon Company. The ability to redownload our purchased games and updates will still remain accessible, but for how long?

Announcement of the end of online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software
Thank you for your continued support of our products.

Starting April 2024, online play and other features using online communication will no longer be available for Nintendo 3DS* and Wii U software. This includes online cooperative play, internet leaderboards, and distribution of data.

Other badge information [vignettes] obtained in Nintendo Badge Arcade to decorate the HOME menu of the Nintendo 3DS are available here.

The date and precise timing of the end of online services will be announced later.

Please note that if an event occurs that makes it difficult to continue online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, we may have to terminate these services earlier than planned.

We sincerely thank players for using the online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software for so long and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

*This includes software exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS.

Q&A

  • Will I be able to continue playing offline after online services end?

Yes. Players will be able to continue to enjoy features and game modes that do not require online communication.

  • Will some online features still be available after online services theoretically end?

It will still be possible to use online services for the following software, but this may also change later: Pokémon Bank and Poké Transfer.

  • Are you also ending online services for software from other publishers than Nintendo?

With few exceptions, all online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software will end. Contact the publishers to learn more about their software’s online services.

  • Will it still be possible to download update data or re-download previously purchased software?

For the time being, it will still be possible to download update data or re-download software and downloadable content that you have purchased from the Nintendo eShop.

  • When online services end, will StreetPass and SpotPass also cease to be available?

StreetPass uses local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems, which means that the functionality will still be available, even after online services end. However, as SpotPass is based on online communication, this feature will no longer be available.

For example, you will be able to continue to use StreetPass on the StreetPass Mii Square which is pre-installed on Nintendo 3DS family systems, but you will no longer be able to take advantage of features using online communication (such as receiving coins in Puzzle Barter).

With the Switch 2 on the horizon (or whatever it’s called), Nintendo So keep cleaning. The Switch still has a bright future ahead of it, hopefully, and you can buy the OLED edition model Mario (red) which comes out this Friday on Amazon, to the Fnac Or at the house of Cdiscount priced at €319.99.
