Today there are 35,867 businesses in Carinthia. Four decades ago it was two-thirds less. In 1980, 15,903 companies were registered and the number has continuously increased. In 2015 the “magic limit” of 30,000 was exceeded for the first time.
In August 2023, the number of employees in Carinthia was 220,000. In 1983 there were 169,700. The unemployment rate was 5.9 percent in August, compared to less than three percent in the 1980s.
In the traditional holiday destination of Carinthia, tourism has been steadily declining over the past four decades. In 1980 there were still 19 million overnight stays, in 2022 almost 13 million.
